In 1871, Joseph Keppler, an Austrian-born cartoonist, created Puck Magazine -- a satire magazine filled with cartoons, caricatures, and commentary on political and social issues of the day. Originally only published in German, Puck evolved from a nearly-failed periodical publication to one of the most popular humor magazines in the United States in the 19th century.
